Dance

Dance is one of the many human experiences which cannot be suppressed. Dancing has existed at all times and among all people and races. The dance, classical or contemporary, is a form of expression given to man just as speech, philosophy, painting or music. With more than 200 children in New Light, we often wonder how channel their seemingly boundless energy. Therefore dance classes are a good way to keep the children physically active. Dancing not only improves physical health, but is also a highly social activity.

The children at New Light belong to extremely challenged and difficult backgrounds. More often than not the children do not feel comfortable in a social set up. Therefore at New Light we encourage the children to dance as dancing helps to alleviate fears related to communicating, to work as part of a team, develop a greater sense of trust and cooperation and make new friends.

At New Light, the children are taught freedom of expression through various dance forms like Kathak and Contemporary dance. Workshops are organized at the Media Advocacy Centre, periodically, to promote the various dance forms amongst the children. Also, the girls at Soma Home are enrolled in classical dance classes.

Proud to be associated with Sapphire Creations Dance Company and Nrityanjali Traditional Kathak Institution where our ex student Supriya Majhi and current students Barsha Sarkar, Krishna Sarkar and Indira Sarkar and Suman Tamang from Khelaghar learn the art under great guidance of the best in the genre.
